If you are thinking of immigrating in to the United Kingdom and are currently based out side the European Economic Area, then you need to read this. All immigrants are now assessed by the use of a points based immigration system that is split into tiers. The first tier ? Tier 1 ? was introduced in June 2008 and covers highly skilled workers. The tier is split in to four sub categories, each of which has their own requirements. The Tier 1 categories are general, post study work, entrepreneur and investor. The new system is the successor to the previous system which was known as the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme or HSMP and uses the same points based frame work to assess all applicants. The scheme applies to highly skilled potential migrants looking for a job or wishing to become self-employed in the United Kingdom, and points are awarded for attributes including age, previous or prospective salary and qualifications. Applicants in the Tier 1 band must score at least 75 points for primary attributes and 10 points each for English language and having the necessary funds to ensure maintenance in the UK.
